The Butler Township Fire Station 88 on Little York Road is in need of repairs due to the age of the structure. This station was built in 1989 and has served the township well over the last 23 years. However, due to the changing needs of the township and the needs of the fire department, renovations and repairs must be made to the station which will give the structure another useful life of 20 to 25 years. The Township advertised for Request for Qualifications from architectural firms and has received 12 applications. The review committee has narrowed down that field to 5 firms and the Township Trustees will interview those firms on May 29th. One firm will be chosen to make recommendations on needed repairs and room modifications and/or additions. The Township hopes to complete those plans by spring of 2013 and then complete the renovations by 2014.

A great deal of curiosity has been stirred by the clearing of land behind the United Dairy Farms (UDF) store at 8733 North Dixie Drive (corner of Little York Road). In early summer, a new UDF store will be constructed on cleared land to the rear of the existing building. The current building will be open for business during most of this new construction, and then will be closed and demolished. If all goes as planned, the site will be closed for business only a short time during this transition. The new UDF will be close in size to the existing store. The reason for all this activity has to do with enlarging the gasoline dispensing islands. Twice as many pumps will be available, and ease of access to and around the site should be greatly improved.

Next to the UDF store lies Township fire station #88. Two modifications will be occurring here. The entire drive apron facing Little York Road has been removed. A large mud pit remains temporarily. Drainage was poor under the old slab, and the drive apron was badly deteriorated. A new concrete apron will be poured after regrading adjustments are made to direct storm runoff away from drive surfaces. And later this year interior and exterior remodeling activities are planned for station #88, including an addition. Out of sight, but to the rear of station #88, drainage is being rerouted to a newly constructed, shared detention pond to be utilized also by UDF.

Elsewhere in the township, Red Lobster (Miller Lane at Benchwood Road) is just wrapping up a facelift employing new siding and sign colors.

Max and Erma’s is planning a similar Miller Lane facelift involving new siding and signage colors. This work should begin in June.

El Toro may have led the way for spring remodeling when extensive alterations, inside and out, were made to the old El Pablo’s.

Not to be outdone by Miller Lane restaurants, Sam’s Club is also planning on some new colors and signage upgrades this summer.

Elsewhere in the township, serious consideration is being given to a new office building on a Dixie Drive lot immediately behind (west) of Sam’s Club and north of Fifth Third Bank. Survey stakes are evident at this site.

Starting May 1, 2012 the Butler Township Fire Department and the Vandalia Fire Department will begin joint staffing at the Vandalia Fire Station 1 located at 8705 Peters Pike. Butler Township will staff two firefighter/EMT’s at this location enabling both departments to provide improved service delivery to citizens in both communities. The joint staffing project began in 2008 with conversations between the township and the city about how to best provide better services to each community, while reducing expense and increase service delivery.

For both departments, it doubles the staffing on one fire engine to a nationally accepted norm as opposed to the crew of two, these collaborated forces will be able to provide a four person firefighting crew. This allows fire crews to more rapidly deploy and immediately begin mitigating the emergency.

Butler Township will benefit by moving the crew from Station 89, closer to the majority of the township’s service demand. 73% of the departments call volume is south of National Road. The township crew will be five to six minutes closer to the southeast portion of the township which accounts for a higher concentration of the service demand for fire and EMS services. This staffing will also allow Butler Township to provide additional resources to those on need in the northern portion of the township.
